5 Signs You Need A Sprinkler System Repair

March 29, 2019

In Kansas, you can’t rely on Mother Nature to take care of your lawn. At some point during the summer months, your grass will start looking burnt and turning yellow. That’s why it’s important to take care of your sprinkler system and quickly attend to any problems that may arise before a costly repair is needed. We suggest taking a look at your system in the spring and checking for these five warning signs that your sprinkler system needs a repair.

1. Uneven Watering

Look for pools of water in various areas of your lawn or sidewalks and driveways that are soaked. Likewise, pay attention to any dry patches of grass. These are signs that a head or two may need to be adjusted or a valve needs looked at.

2. Loss of Pressure

If there is a loss of pressure in a zone or head and it’s not spraying water like it should, this is a sign something in the system is malfunctioning. Too little pressure won’t deliver the water your yard needs and too much pressure will prematurely wear out your system’s equipment. If the control valves and regulators seem fine, the problem could be in the irrigation pipes. These pipes are susceptible to the shifting ground and tree roots just like plumbing pipes are.

3. Sputtering Heads

When sprinkler heads start spraying off-target, they might be responding to a valve or pressure problem. However, they could have developed cracks that are altering their performance or have become clogged with accumulated debris. Pop-up heads also shift out of position and may need to be readjusted.

4. Dripping Control Valves

The valve is responsible for delivering the right amount of water to each area of your yard. It’s not normal for a well-operating valve to be constantly dripping or leaking. Damp areas around pressure regulators and filters is a sign of trouble. Don’t ignore these drips. Check the equipment for any dirt particles, grass clippings, mold or bubbles.

5. High Water Bill

If your monthly water bill is suddenly abnormally high, you will want to have an irrigation professional check your system. You could have a leak that is letting water escape from the pipes causing money to drain out of your wallet.
